Pikeville @ Pike County Central

Pikeville picPike Central pic

On Jan. 28, 2011 Pikeville traveled to Pike County Central less than 24 hours after a overtime victory at home vs. Shelby Valley.  This game was stated to be a heated rivalry between the two in county schools that are separated by less than 5 miles, and promoted heavy fan and pep support for this game.  It would be a good match up between the two teams and Pikeville would show some fatigue but this one wouldn’t be close enough and a second straight night of overtime for Pikeville.  Pikeville would win this game by a score of Pikeville – 73 Pike County Central – 59.  Pikeville would improve to (W-L) 14-5 on the season, 8-2 in the region, and 2-0 in district; while Pike County Central would fall to (W-L) 8-7 on the season, 3-4 in the region, and 1-1 in district play.  This game also along with the Pikeville/Shelby Valley match up the night before shows just how wide open the 15th region is this year.

59th District Battle - Shelby Valley vs. Pikeville

Shelby Valley traveled to Pikeville for a 59th District battle on Jan 27, 2011.  This one turned out to be more heated than expected between the two showing the power in the 59th District.  The lead changed hands many times and there were multiple ties throughout the game, but none was more important than the tie of 61-61 with under 10 seconds remaining.  This tie would then lead to an overtime time period with the two teams battling for a much needed district win.  The game would end after one overtime period with a score of Pikeville – 68 Shelby Valley – 64.  Pikeville would improve to (W-L) 13-5 on the season, 7-2 in the region, and 2-0 in district. Shelby Valley would fall to (W-L) 5-11on the season, 3-7 in the region, and 0-2 in the district.

East Ridge Warriors off to same start as season they went to Rupp!

The East Ridge Warriors Boys Basketball team has a Win-Loss Record of 13-3 as of Jan. 25, 2011, which ties the record at the same point in the season of 2003/2004 with a Win-Loss record of 13-3 as well.  The 2003/2004 season for the Warriors set the standard for the program, which was in its second season.  During the 2003/2004 season the Warriors reach many milestones (or touchstones) which include winning the 59th District Championship, and the 15th Region Championship that earned them a trip to the Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.  That year also holds the best record in school history for the Warriors, finishing with a (W-L) 24-8 season record.  The Warriors have a shot at breaking the season record, winning the 59th District Championship for a third time,  as well as winning the 15th Region Championship for a second time, earning a trip back to Rupp and playing for a State Championship.  But it won't be easy; they face some fierce competition from their own district and region.

59th District Battle

The 59th District basketball teams have a history of being strong producing a State Champion last year.  This year the 59th District is once again strong, producing the top two teams in the 15th Region and two of the best in the mountains, being the East Ridge Warriors and the Pikeville Panthers.  Both teams have a great opportunity to make it to the state basketball championship tournament at Rupp Arena and this matchup could be seen in the championship game of the 59th District and possibly, if everything plays out as the past, in the 15th Region Championship game as well.  East Ridge and Pikeville took to the court in a 59th District game on Jan. 22, 2011 at East Ridge, and was important for both teams.  The end result was Pikeville coming away with a good win over East Ridge by a score of 80-67.  Improving the Panthers to 12-4 (W-L) for the season, 6-1 in the Region, and 1-0 in the District; while dropping the Warriors to 12-3 (W-L) for the season, 6-1 in the Region, and 1-1 in the District.  The two are set to play another match on Feb. 1, 2011 at Pikeville at 7:30 pm; this is guaranteed to be a good 59th District Battle and good rivalry match.

East Ridge Boys Basketball Breaks Streak(s), Makes History!

On Tuesday January 18, 2011 the East Ridge High School Warriors Basketball team broke a streak dating back to 2002, by being the first 15th region team to beat, the Shelby Valley Wildcats on their home court since Paintsville on Dec 20, 2002.  East Ridge is also the first Pike County team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since Pikeville in the 2000 59th District Tournament Championship game and since Pike County Central during the 1999 regular season.  East Ridge is only the second team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since the 2004/2005 season.  This also makes the first home court loss for Shelby Valley since winning their State Championship title last year.  This East Ridge team also made school history with this win by being the first ever East Ridge team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since the establishment of East Ridge.  Adding the fact that Shelby Valley and East Ridge have been arch rivals since the debut of East Ridge, and that Shelby Valley is the defending State Champions, makes this win even greater for Warrior fans.
