2011 Boys 15th Region Championship Game–March 8, 2011

The Shelby Valley Wildcats defeated the Pikeville Panthers 49 to 42 to win the 15th region championship game, on March 8, 2011 at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville, Ky.  This makes the Wildcats 3rd straight 15th region championship title.  They had no easy road and fought through powerful teams and criticism, some who thought they couldn’t make it out of the district tournament, never thinking of them going back to the state tournament. Shelby Valley fought through the district beating a powerful East Ridge team in the first round by a close score of 33-32.  The Wildcats then went on to face Pikeville in the district championship game but lost a hard fought game 47-53, and the received the runner up in the district, which gave them a pass to the region championship in which they faced more tough teams.  First by defeating a powerful Johnson Central team close 50-49 then facing a strong Pike Central team and beating them 58-53 which earned them a trip to the regional championship game, in which they defeated Pikeville 49-42.  Shelby Valley, you could argue, was a Cinderella team this year with no one expecting this kind of run for them to win the region, though they are still defending state champions. Shelby Valley is the first district runner-up team to win the 15th region since Johnson Central in the 2005/2006 season.  The Wildcats only won district games this season during the post-season tournaments, and they also won the region with a losing record.  Pikeville falls to and ends their season at (W-L) 22-8 on the season, 16-4 in the region, and 5-1 in the district. Shelby Valley improve to (W-L) 13-17 on the season, 10-10 in the region, and 2-5 in district.  Shelby Valley will now move on to Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky to represent the 15th region in the PNC/KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament. The Wildcats will play the Christian County Colonels from the 2nd region who have a season record of (W-L) 21-9 and are ranked at the top in points and wins on the season in their region, the Colonels were also runner-up in their district and made it to the state tournament.   The Shelby Valley vs. Christian County game is set to take place on March 16, 2011 at 6:30 PM at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

Good Luck Shelby Valley Wildcats!

Betsy Layne All “A” State Champions!

Betsy Layne pic

The Betsy Layne Bobcats won the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic State Championship on Feb. 6, 2011 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky.  To reach the championship game Betsy Layne won the 15th Region All "A” Classic at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center in Pikeville, Kentucky by defeating Pikeville (49-44), Sheldon Clark (61-46), and Paintsville (55-43).  Betsy Layne then went to the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic State Championship Tournament in Richmond, Ky. where they defeated Gallatin County (53-44), West Carter (58-56 OT), and Danville (60-53) which won them the chance to play in the state championship game where they played DeSales.  Betsy Layne took off in the first half outscoring DeSales 25-11 in the first half of play, then DeSales came back strong in the second half.  But Betsy Layne would hold them off and win by a final score of Betsy Layne 44, DeSales 41 to earn them the title of All “A” State Champions.  Betsy Layne’s title win gives the 15th region the All “A” state champions title for the third consecutive year, and are the first team in Floyd County history to win a state tournament title. Betsy Layne improves to (W-L) 18-5 on the season, and DeSales falls to (W-L)11-14 on the season. Betsy Layne’s next game is Feb. 7, 2011 against Allen Central at home.

Belfry at East Ridge

The Belfry Pirates traveled to East Ridge on Feb. 4, 2011 for a 15th region, in county matchup. The game was back and forth and by half time East Ridge had built a 28 to Belfry 23 lead.  But the second half would resemble the first half and be back and forth.  Belfry would come back and build a lead, then East Ridge would build back up, but the end of the game would see Belfry win.  The final score would be Belfry 63, East Ridge 55; Belfry would improve to (W-L)11-6 on the season, and 6-3 in the region, and East Ridge would fall to (W-L) 14-6 on the season, and 8-4 in the region.  East Ridge now has their first straight 3 game loss of the season and their first straight 2 game home court loss of the season.  East Ridge’s next game is Feb 8, 2011 at home against 59th district rival Shelby Valley set to start at 7:30 pm.  Belfry goes to Matewan, WV on Feb 5, 2011 set to start at 7:30 pm

Betsy Layne Advances

Betsy Layne pic

Betsy  Layne went into the second round of the All “A” Classic on Feb 4, 2011 at EKU.  Their opponent was West Carter, and this game would be fought harder and last longer than anyone expected.  Betsy Layne for this game made 20 of 53 field goals shooting 37.7%, made 4 of 13 3-point field goals for 30.8%, made 14 of 23 free throws for 60.9% and had 42 rebounds.  This game would go into overtime and being the late game of the tournament wouldn’t get over until after midnight. With under 12 seconds remaining in overtime and after Betsy Layne gained a 2 point lead, West Carter received the ball out of their timeout.  They had to run entire floor and could either tie with a two and possible send it into another overtime or take the lead and possibly win the game. West Carter would drive the ball and go up for a quick shot, but Betsy Layne would block the shot and know the ball out of bounds with seconds winding down.  One referee signaled out of bounds possession West Carter and one referee signaled end of game, and that referee would overrule the other and end of game would be called.  This call gave Betsy Layne another win and a chance to advance with a final score of Betsy Layne 58, West Carter 56 in overtime.  West Carter would fall to 16-6 on the season.  Betsy Layne would improve to 16-5 on the season and advance to the next game in the tournament to play Danville (W-L: 14-7) on Feb. 5, 2011 set to tip at 2:30 pm.

Pikeville @ Pike County Central

Pikeville picPike Central pic

On Jan. 28, 2011 Pikeville traveled to Pike County Central less than 24 hours after a overtime victory at home vs. Shelby Valley.  This game was stated to be a heated rivalry between the two in county schools that are separated by less than 5 miles, and promoted heavy fan and pep support for this game.  It would be a good match up between the two teams and Pikeville would show some fatigue but this one wouldn’t be close enough and a second straight night of overtime for Pikeville.  Pikeville would win this game by a score of Pikeville – 73 Pike County Central – 59.  Pikeville would improve to (W-L) 14-5 on the season, 8-2 in the region, and 2-0 in district; while Pike County Central would fall to (W-L) 8-7 on the season, 3-4 in the region, and 1-1 in district play.  This game also along with the Pikeville/Shelby Valley match up the night before shows just how wide open the 15th region is this year.

59th District Battle - Shelby Valley vs. Pikeville

Shelby Valley traveled to Pikeville for a 59th District battle on Jan 27, 2011.  This one turned out to be more heated than expected between the two showing the power in the 59th District.  The lead changed hands many times and there were multiple ties throughout the game, but none was more important than the tie of 61-61 with under 10 seconds remaining.  This tie would then lead to an overtime time period with the two teams battling for a much needed district win.  The game would end after one overtime period with a score of Pikeville – 68 Shelby Valley – 64.  Pikeville would improve to (W-L) 13-5 on the season, 7-2 in the region, and 2-0 in district. Shelby Valley would fall to (W-L) 5-11on the season, 3-7 in the region, and 0-2 in the district.

East Ridge Warriors off to same start as season they went to Rupp!

The East Ridge Warriors Boys Basketball team has a Win-Loss Record of 13-3 as of Jan. 25, 2011, which ties the record at the same point in the season of 2003/2004 with a Win-Loss record of 13-3 as well.  The 2003/2004 season for the Warriors set the standard for the program, which was in its second season.  During the 2003/2004 season the Warriors reach many milestones (or touchstones) which include winning the 59th District Championship, and the 15th Region Championship that earned them a trip to the Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.  That year also holds the best record in school history for the Warriors, finishing with a (W-L) 24-8 season record.  The Warriors have a shot at breaking the season record, winning the 59th District Championship for a third time,  as well as winning the 15th Region Championship for a second time, earning a trip back to Rupp and playing for a State Championship.  But it won't be easy; they face some fierce competition from their own district and region.

59th District Battle

The 59th District basketball teams have a history of being strong producing a State Champion last year.  This year the 59th District is once again strong, producing the top two teams in the 15th Region and two of the best in the mountains, being the East Ridge Warriors and the Pikeville Panthers.  Both teams have a great opportunity to make it to the state basketball championship tournament at Rupp Arena and this matchup could be seen in the championship game of the 59th District and possibly, if everything plays out as the past, in the 15th Region Championship game as well.  East Ridge and Pikeville took to the court in a 59th District game on Jan. 22, 2011 at East Ridge, and was important for both teams.  The end result was Pikeville coming away with a good win over East Ridge by a score of 80-67.  Improving the Panthers to 12-4 (W-L) for the season, 6-1 in the Region, and 1-0 in the District; while dropping the Warriors to 12-3 (W-L) for the season, 6-1 in the Region, and 1-1 in the District.  The two are set to play another match on Feb. 1, 2011 at Pikeville at 7:30 pm; this is guaranteed to be a good 59th District Battle and good rivalry match.

East Ridge Boys Basketball Breaks Streak(s), Makes History!

On Tuesday January 18, 2011 the East Ridge High School Warriors Basketball team broke a streak dating back to 2002, by being the first 15th region team to beat, the Shelby Valley Wildcats on their home court since Paintsville on Dec 20, 2002.  East Ridge is also the first Pike County team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since Pikeville in the 2000 59th District Tournament Championship game and since Pike County Central during the 1999 regular season.  East Ridge is only the second team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since the 2004/2005 season.  This also makes the first home court loss for Shelby Valley since winning their State Championship title last year.  This East Ridge team also made school history with this win by being the first ever East Ridge team to beat Shelby Valley on their home court since the establishment of East Ridge.  Adding the fact that Shelby Valley and East Ridge have been arch rivals since the debut of East Ridge, and that Shelby Valley is the defending State Champions, makes this win even greater for Warrior fans.
